Lo spirito del bosco (The spirit of the forest)
Recordings, editing and direction: Sara Maino and Claudia Ferretti
Teachers: Eva Fornari, Elvira Cosentino
Year 2026 Duration 15’00

This vocal and sound composition is the result of a live performance held in the quarries of Bosco Caproni in Arco, a mountainous area of Trentino, in Italy. The protagonists are eighteen pupils from Year V at Massone Primary School and their teachers. They took part in the educational and artistic project “In the Great Book of the World, with my Ears“, with the aim to exploring the soundscape of their village and of the surrounding area.

The idea was conceived by sound artist and researcher Sara Maino and brought to life in collaboration with teachers Eva Fornari, Miriam Michelotti and Elvira Cosentino, Irene Matassoni and musician Claudia Ferretti.

The children were first invited to listen to the natural soundscape of the quarries, then to observe, draw and interpret the ‘music’ etched into the rock formations, and finally to sing, drawing inspiration from the dripping water.

Here, their voices seek to attune themselves to the language of the rocks, in the hope of striking up a sonic dialogue with the genius loci, the spirit of the place.

Wandering around the Belgian Coast of the North Sea, I sometimes do my field recordings’ sessions in search of inspiration and new ideas.

On Thursday 13th January 2022 I walked along the beach in Koksijde-Bad, at sunset. It was an amazing perfect time-space-sound conjunction.

I shared on Twitter the sound recording and the picture I took that moment. The tweet has been noticed by the Dutch based site Field Recordings, which published this contribution on 18th January 2022.

The site is “a podcast where audio-makers stand silently in fields (or things that could be broadly interpreted as fields).”

Koumaria Residency is organized by Medea Electronique, Athens

Since 2009 the artist collective Medea Electronique has organized annually a 10-day experimental artist residency, Koumaria, near Sparta in Greece, focusing on improvisation and new media practices. Avant-garde artists from all over the world, inspired by the Greek natural landscape, come together to create a multicultural and cross-media ‘dialogue’ culminating in a collective presentation in Athens at the end of the residency.

The goal of the residency is the creation of an educational experience for the participants that will inspire and exalt their future work. The cross-cultural dialogues that the residency engenders both create new artistic speculations and smelt older assumptions. Past residents have formed lasting friendships and new artistic partnerships. Medea Electronique, being an eclectic art collective, is interested in people from diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds. For us the residency serves as a model for future creative endeavors.
